Chapter 140: The Look of a Secretary

Early that morning, Song Qingtian told Ling Hanyu she was going to take her daughter to school and then head over to the office.

Ling Hanyu offered to drive her, but she refused.

“I’ll just pop by and check things out. I did promise to go to work—this was an agreement,” she said.

Ling Hanyu looked at Song Qingtian. “I’ll drive you.”

No room for argument.

Ling Hanyu stepped outside and got into the car.

Ling Nuonuo tilted her little face up to look at her. “Mommy, Daddy’s mad!”

“He’s not mad—he’s just putting on a show.”

Song Qingtian buckled her daughter into the car and they headed off to school together.

Once there, she waited for a while, then went inside to observe how her daughter was doing in class. It took her the better part of two lessons to confirm her suspicions before finally leaving the kindergarten.

Song Qingtian’s methodical approach left Ling Hanyu with mixed feelings as he watched her.

Back in the day, Song Qingtian wasn’t like this at all.

Her eyes were always on him, and she wasn’t nearly as shrewd.

Now, though, she handles everything herself—and does it once and for all.

Take their daughter, for example: she doesn’t interfere, but she certainly doesn’t ignore it either.

As the car sped down the road, Song Qingtian knew she’d wasted Ling Hanyu’s time.

He had somewhere important to be.

Throughout the ride, Song Qingtian remained silent, her eyes closed as if resting.

She was trying to figure out whether the outline she’d been working on included anything about that piece of land—or perhaps some other details about Qin Xiaotian.

Unfortunately, it didn’t.

As for Qin Xiaotian, the novel never mentions anything else about him. He’s the Mysterious Big Shot who gets saved by the original supporting character. At first, he wants to help her replace the main heroine, Song Yinyin. But Song Yinyin is full of schemes, while the supporting character is a bit of a fool. When Song Yinyin stirs her up, she just goes along with it.

The Mysterious Big Shot is furious at her lack of initiative and eventually gives up on her altogether, letting her fend for herself.

As for that piece of land, the novel says it was developed by someone else—a businessman entirely different from the one we know today.

But if everything was already predetermined, could it be that Ling Hanyu is that very villainous businessman?

Song Qingtian opened her eyes, feeling a pang of melancholy.

It wasn’t that she didn’t want to get involved—it was that she worried it might backfire.

Even though she managed to get the land into Qin Xiaotian’s hands, in the end he still passed it straight on to Ling Hanyu.

Who would have thought that Qin Xiaotian would actually be willing to toss such a juicy prize right into Ling Hanyu’s lap?

Everything seems to be changing, yet in the end it’s still following the exact same path as in the original novel.

In other words, no matter how hard you try, it may all just be part of the process—the final outcome will still be the same.

Still, when she thinks about those people at the orphanage, Song Qingtian can’t help but dwell on it.

Right now, she has two choices: either turn a blind eye to what’s happening at the orphanage and let events unfold on their own, even if it means watching those people become homeless and end up dying on the streets—she won’t have any responsibility for it in the end.

But given her personality, she’d surely feel guilty about that.

The other option is to take on this hot potato herself. No matter what happens, she’ll have done her best and can hold her head high!

After much deliberation, Song Qingtian decided to act on her compassion.

If she’s going to die, so be it—better to live without regrets!

Song Qingtian thought about Qin Xiaotian’s departure, about how she hadn’t even had a chance to properly repay her father before she ended up in this book.

She resolved to live in the moment and cherish what’s right in front of her.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to regret something and leave yourself with lingering remorse.

The car came to a stop, and Song Qingtian opened her eyes.

When she saw the company building ahead, she stepped out of the car.

Ling Hanyu parked the car neatly, and the company’s security guard came over, got into the car, and drove it away.

Song Qingtian headed into the office, with Ling Hanyu right behind her. But as soon as they reached the entrance, Song Qingtian stopped and waited for him.

When Ling Hanyu looked up, Song Qingtian was already standing there, ready to greet him. The automatic door slid open, and Song Qingtian stood patiently, waiting for him to enter.

After all, if she’s here to act as a secretary, she needs to carry herself like one—she can’t overstep her role.

Ling Hanyu didn’t rush inside; instead, he gave the people downstairs a cold, detached glance, especially the security guards.

The icy air made the guards break out in a cold sweat.

The security captain hurried over to Song Qingtian. “Madam, let me do it.”

Song Qingtian wasn’t one to argue, after all—the security guard is the one who’s supposed to open the door.

Everyone knows that when Mr. Ling walks in, someone has to open the door first—but that someone definitely isn’t Song Qingtian.
