Chapter 109: Counterattack 35
“Of course I can do it!”
Gu Yanyun nodded solemnly, yet couldn’t help glancing repeatedly at the man’s retreating figure.
Although it was his own older brother who had been humiliated, that didn’t diminish his admiration for the man in the slightest.
That move just now was absolutely awesome!
If he could ever master such a skill, he’d probably be able to strut around Ning City with absolute confidence!
Haha!
An idol!
A living idol!
Only after the man’s silhouette had completely vanished did Gu Yanyun finally pull back his drooling gaze.
But in an instant, a trace of solemnity appeared on the little guy’s face as he turned to ask his brother, “Brother, back then… at Sister Yue’s family…”
He didn’t know why, but just thinking about Ming Yue—about all the things that had happened to the Ming family years ago—made him feel unbearably stifled and miserable, as if something were tightly lodged in his chest.
It took him quite a while to calm himself down before he mustered the courage to ask his brother the question that had been gnawing at his heart for so many years: “Back then, they were poisoned, weren’t they?”
“Why do you ask that?”
Instead of answering his younger brother directly, Gu Yanxing posed the question back to him.
A wave of sadness once again welled up uncontrollably on Gu Yanyun’s face.
He said in a low voice, “Brother, I may be a bit naive and still young, so there are many things I don’t understand. But I’m not stupid. Back then, one after another, so many terrible things happened to the Ming family—Brother Ming Kai, Aunt Song, Ming Yao, plus Grandpa Song and Uncle Song—all perfectly healthy people. How could they keep suffering misfortune one after another? Some died, some went mad, some became paralyzed, some suffered strokes, some ran away. The entire Song family and Sister Ming Yue and her son—except for Sister Ming Yue herself—none of them are left unscathed. If this wasn’t the result of being poisoned, then there must be ghosts involved—and not just any ordinary ghost, but a vengeful spirit from another world. The Song family and Sister Ming have somehow provoked this vengeful spirit.”
“That’s a very reasonable analysis,” Gu Yanxing replied, neither confirming nor denying, but instead pressing further: “Then let me ask you another question: Since everyone in the Song family and Sister Ming Yue’s family has suffered misfortune, why is it that only Sister Ming Yue remains unharmed?”
“Is Sister Ming Yue really unharmed? If I remember correctly, back then she was even chased around by that old beggar woman from the Ming family, who kept calling her the ‘star of death’!”
Gu Yanyun shot back, his mind flooded with those vile insults and the image of his poor, helpless sister, weeping secretly in solitude.
Gu Yanxing didn’t deny it; he essentially acknowledged it.
Gu Yanyun clenched his fists and said indignantly, “So how could she possibly be unharmed? Back then, so much sorrow was piled onto her alone that she must have been on the verge of breaking down. But what about those heartless, ruthless people? Not one of them cared about Sister Ming Yue—they even kept dumping bucket after bucket of filth on her. Isn’t that another kind of harm? If Sister Ming Yue had been a bit more fragile, a bit weaker, wouldn’t that have played right into their hands, leading her down the same path as her mother, Aunt Song?”
Gu Yanxing still didn’t say anything, effectively tacitly agreeing with this answer.
He still remembered that when the Ming family fell into trouble—especially when Brother Ming Kai was in danger—Ming Yue was utterly devastated and nearly lost her life.
Fu Qiancheng couldn’t bear to leave her side; day and night he stayed by her bedside, coaxing her to eat and drink in every possible way, arranging for doctors to give her glucose drips, and keeping strangers far away from her—only then did he manage to save her life.
Otherwise…
At this point, Gu Yanyun added, “Besides, Brother, don’t you think so too?”
“What do you mean?”
“Of course I mean that the reason those evil-doers spared Sister Ming Yue’s life is twofold: first, because back then Sister Ming Yue was so weak she posed no real threat; second, because they needed her to help them wash away their own sins.”
“The first point is spot-on. But what about the second?”
“They’ve committed countless atrocities, yet they insist on making themselves look so virtuous. They’re clearly demons, but they go out of their way to disguise themselves as bodhisattvas.”
