Chapter 209: Counterattack 136
Liu Qingqing headed straight for the surveillance room, with a simple reason: she thought she might have lost a ring in the residential compound last night and wanted to check the surveillance footage for any clues.
The person in charge didn’t think twice. Knowing Zhang Yang and his parents—both of whom were very amiable and easy to get along with—he immediately pulled up the surveillance footage from the time Liu Qingqing requested and, after a while, kindly asked her, “Miss Liu, how was it? Did you find any traces?”
Liu Qingqing had been staring at the surveillance screen the whole time, her initial curiosity gradually giving way to a numb, rigid state.
By now, she was just standing there like a dazed idiot, staring blankly at the screen, her face turning pale, completely oblivious to anything else going on around her.
It wasn’t for any other reason—she simply couldn’t see anyone who looked like Ming Kai, nor could she spot a young man anywhere in the footage.
Throughout the entire recording, it was only her and Zhang Yang.
Liu Qingqing was shocked, nearly falling to the ground—but luckily there was a table nearby, which allowed her to steady herself just in time.
Still, she couldn’t bring herself to believe such an unbelievable thing could happen, so she mustered all her strength to ask the staff member beside her, “Excuse me, has there ever been any malfunction with your surveillance system?”
“Malfunction?”
The staff member asked, puzzled.
Liu Qingqing nodded vigorously. “Yes, a malfunction—has there ever been one, especially recently?”
As she spoke, she kept repeating to herself, “No way! Absolutely no way! How could something like this possibly happen?”
“There must be something wrong somewhere, or maybe the cameras themselves are at fault,” she reasoned. “Such a large person surely couldn’t have slipped through unnoticed!”
If she remembered correctly, Zhang Yang had seen it too—how could he possibly have missed it?
While waiting for an answer, Liu Qingqing kept reassuring herself like this, her weak body slowly sliding down until she sank into the chair beside her.
But the staff member shook his head without hesitation, firmly telling her, “No, there hasn’t been any malfunction! Our equipment is regularly maintained and fairly new, so it’s never broken down. Miss Liu, did you not find your ring after all?”
He couldn’t help but wonder: “The Zhang Family isn’t exactly poor—their parents both receive pensions, and Zhang Yang himself is said to be quite successful. How can someone as stingy as his wife-to-be be?”
She may look pretty and dress well, but to lose her temper over something as trivial as a missing ring—and act like this afterward—is really over the top!
“Miss Liu, please don’t worry. If it doesn’t work out today, we’ll try again. I’ll help you look together.”
He sat down and began fiddling with the computer, rewinding the footage back to the exact point Liu Qingqing had requested. He sat right beside her, watching the surveillance video alongside her.
But after staring at it for what felt like ages—going through the entire clip again and again—they still couldn’t find any evidence that Liu Qingqing had lost anything.
Then again, the camera wasn’t exactly close enough to capture details clearly, so it was entirely possible they’d missed a tiny ring. Seeing how distressed Liu Qingqing looked, almost on the verge of collapse, he decided to offer some comfort: “Miss Liu, why don’t you go back and search the route you took last night yourself, just to be sure? After all, it was nighttime, and you weren’t exactly near the cameras, so they might not have caught everything. Plus, rings are really small—if you really did lose one during that time, it’s not guaranteed the cameras would’ve picked it up. Look, even when I zoom in, the image is still pretty blurry.”
“Okay, okay,” Liu Qingqing replied.
