Chapter 116: Counterattack 42
Ming Yue had never been so flustered before.
At least, not in Jiang Feng’s memory.
Ever since they met, she had always been steady and composed.
Back then, her composure was a quiet, unassuming kind—one that naturally made those around her want to protect and cherish her. Now, however, her composure carried a sharp edge, making everyone hesitate to get too close.
Yet today, there wasn’t the slightest trace of that steadiness about her. She looked like a little girl with no backbone, utterly panicked, repeatedly asking Jiang Feng, who was driving: “Jiang Feng, Sister Lin will be all right, won’t she? She’ll be fine, right?”
Jiang Feng simply replied with a soft “Mm,” one hand on the wheel and the other gently holding her anxious little hand, repeating his answer over and over.
He showed no impatience or dissatisfaction—only deep, heartfelt concern, a tender compassion and boundless patience for her.
After all, he had witnessed every grim detail of the Ming Family’s tragedy back then.
He knew better than anyone how she had slowly but surely emerged from those shadows.
How many times… how many nights had she completely fallen apart, nearly…
The car sped recklessly down the road.
As it passed trees that hurried to move out of the way and rows of streetlights receding behind, Ming Yue’s eyes grew moist without her even realizing it.
Staring at the road outside the window, she gripped Jiang Feng’s large hand tightly, her breathing growing rapid: “Jiang Feng, please help me! Find Sister Lin for me! You’ve got to find her! She can’t be hurt! Sister Lin can’t be hurt! I just can’t bear the thought of anything happening to her!”
Although Lin Xi wasn’t a member of the Ming Family, nor was she Brother Ming Kai’s girlfriend,
in Ming Yue’s heart, she was family—indeed, one of the very few remaining members of her family!
And family should be safe and well!
“Don’t worry, I know, I know everything! I’ve already dispatched extra people to search her family’s place and contacted the local police station. She’ll be fine—trust me, absolutely fine. She’ll be perfectly all right!”
“Okay.”
Ming Yue nodded, but her heart still couldn’t calm down.
This, perhaps, is what people mean when they say “overconcern leads to confusion.”
They soon arrived at Lin Xi’s residence—not the recently shut-down Wanxi Academy, but the apartment Lin Xi rented in the city center.
The place wasn’t big, but it was warmly decorated.
A small one-bedroom, two-living-room unit, filled everywhere with traces of Lin Xi’s daily life—and unmistakable signs of Big Brother Ming Kai’s presence as well.
As Xiao Hu had said, the apartment was empty, save for a cellphone left behind and a thief crouching on the floor, completely frozen in fear, caught by Xiao Hu.
There were no signs of forced entry or lock-picking, nor any evidence of a struggle; it was clear at a glance that Lin Xi hadn’t been taken by force.
“Feng Ge, Sao Zi…”
Xiao Hu lowered his head, too afraid to meet Ming Yue’s and Jiang Feng’s eyes, lest they start berating him mercilessly.
Ming Yue had plenty to say.
But seeing Xiao Hu like this, her heart softened, and she found herself unable to utter a single word, only letting out a faint sigh.
“She wasn’t taken by force, and nothing valuable was stolen—she doesn’t look like she’s planning a long trip either. How did your search around the neighborhood go?”
Jiang Feng interjected at the right moment.
Xiao Hu shook his head, his voice low: “I didn’t find anything, but I just checked the surveillance footage in the residential complex. According to the video, Miss Lin seemed to be following someone.”
