Chapter 122: Counterattack 48
Home is always a safe haven.
Wherever there is home, there will always be a guiding light.
Since returning home, Ming Yue’s sharp edge has visibly softened.
Whether in front of her maternal grandfather, her uncle and aunt, or especially her younger siblings, she has become exceptionally well-behaved and gentle—no longer the fiercely assertive Ming Yue of the Ming family in Ningcheng.
Jiang Feng watched her, a charming smile unconsciously playing on his lips.
Especially when he saw Ming Yue laughing and playing with Yaoyao, an energetic, adorable little girl seemed to appear in his field of vision without him even noticing.
The little girl had the same beautiful face as Ming Yue, but her eyebrows and eyes were just like his; her upturned little nose was a dead ringer for Ming Yue’s, and her lovely mouth was also a perfect replica. With two pigtails tied neatly, she was vying with Yaoyao for Ming Yue’s embrace.
But the little one couldn’t quite win against Yaoyao, who towered over her by several head lengths. Pouting slightly, she looked over at him and said, “Dad, hurry up and help me! Mom’s about to be snatched away by Auntie!”
Jiang Feng gazed at the scene and suddenly burst out laughing, so hard that he didn’t even notice Ming Yao had already come over to him, leaning on his cane.
It wasn’t until Ming Yao patted him on the shoulder and asked what he was laughing at that he snapped back to reality, offering a perfunctory reply: “Oh, nothing, nothing—just thought of something funny.”
Jiang Feng patted the chair beside him and said, “What are you doing all the way over here? Have a seat.”
“Mm.”
Ming Yao carefully shuffled over to the chair, managing to sit down on his own without any help, relying entirely on his strength and skill. Jiang Feng watched this with great satisfaction and gently patted Ming Yao on the back, saying, “You’re recovering nicely. It looks like it won’t be long before you’re back to normal and jumping around again.”
“Brother-in-law, thank you.”
In fact, the real relationship between Ming Yue and Jiang Feng was kept hidden not only from the people of Ningcheng, but also from the very relatives Ming Yue cared about most.
When he first appeared before Ming Yue’s family, he was introduced as her fiancé.
So both her maternal grandfather and her uncle and aunt treated him like their son-in-law, while Yaoyao and Yaoyao called him “brother-in-law.”
At first, Jiang Feng wasn’t used to it, but now he actually likes the title more and more. He squinted his eyes in a warm smile and waved his hand, saying, “No need to be formal with ‘brother-in-law.’ It’s only natural. As long as your sister is happy, I’ll do anything for her.”
Ming Yao smiled brightly, his gaze slowly drifting toward his older sister, Ming Yue, and then falling silent for a long while.
After a good while, he finally spoke up again: “Brother-in-law, please, please protect her!”
Though still young, his voice was remarkably steady.
Jiang Feng was taken aback, then turned to look at the boy whose youthful innocence hadn’t quite faded yet: “What do you mean by that? My sister and I are just going on a business trip—what kind of danger could there possibly be?”
Jiang Feng was just making things up.
Ming Yue had never told anyone in the family about her plan to return to Ningcheng and seek revenge; she’d always told them she was just going on a business trip. So it was no wonder Jiang Feng was surprised to hear such a sudden statement from this big boy.
Ming Yao slowly withdrew his gaze from his sister and fixed his eyes on the man beside him, his smile gradually fading to be replaced by a solemn, earnest expression.
He lowered his voice and said, “Brother-in-law, I’m not a child anymore. I know where my sister went, and I know what she’s been doing!”
“Yaoyao…”
“These things should have been my responsibility, but now I’m lame—I can’t even protect myself.”
His eyes were slightly reddened.
Jiang Feng still wouldn’t admit it, but he didn’t say a word either, just quietly watching this unfortunate child beside him.
