Chapter 124: The Counterattack

“Sister, what’s wrong?”

Before Ming Yue could even hang up the phone, Ming Yao already asked.

Behind them, Jiang Feng also inquired softly, “What happened?”

“Nothing much—just going out for a bit.”

Ming Yue didn’t tell them what the person on the other end of the line had said.

It wasn’t that she was deliberately trying to hide it; she was simply exhausted and didn’t feel like talking at all.

After whispering a couple of brief instructions to the person on the phone, she hung up, grabbed her coat and car keys, and headed out.

Jiang Feng and Ming Yao didn’t press further; they quietly followed behind Ming Yue.

Not long after, Jiang Feng received a call.

It was from the Butler at the neighboring Liaoyang Zhuangyuan.

The caller didn’t say much, just informing Jiang Feng: “Sir, Ms. Song has attempted suicide again. Fortunately, she was discovered in time—she’s okay now, but extremely agitated.”

Jiang Feng replied, “Got it,” then hurriedly hung up and rushed off, finally understanding why Ming Yue had looked so pale just moments before.

It turned out to be about her Mother.

Over the years, Ming Yue had grown increasingly weary of her mother—who would often act erratically yet occasionally regain her composure.

But there was really no blaming her.

As a daughter, she had done her very best—everything she possibly could!

Jiang Feng let out a quiet sigh in his heart. Supporting Ming Yao, who leaned heavily on his cane, he leaned close to Ming Yao’s ear and softly relayed the news he’d just received.

Ming Yao’s expression immediately darkened, and he unconsciously quickened his pace.

Still, he wasn’t entirely steady.

It was only thanks to Jiang Feng’s support that he didn’t fall.

At that moment, Yao Yao, who had been playing on the grass, noticed her sister was about to leave. She hurried over and clung to her sister’s leg, asking, “Sister, where are you going?”

The little girl tilted her head up, her big, bright eyes sparkling as she spoke in a sweet, tender voice—one that could instantly melt away the coldest, most frozen feelings in anyone’s heart.

Ming Yue was no exception.

As soon as the little girl wrapped her arms around her leg, Ming Yue deliberately suppressed all traces of emotion on her face, replacing them with a gentle smile. She crouched down, scooped the child into her arms, gently stroked her round little head, and said in a soft, warm voice, “Sister has a tiny, tiny little matter to take care of, so she needs to step out for a bit. Why don’t you go play with Mom and Grandpa, Yao Yao? Okay?”

“Can’t Yao Yao go out with Sister?” Yao Yao frowned, clearly puzzled.

Ming Yue shook her head, smiling even more warmly. “It’s not a place kids can go, and it wouldn’t be fun anyway. How about this instead, Yao Yao? You go find Mom and Grandpa first, and when Sister gets back, she’ll bring you some candy. Then we can go out together this afternoon, alright?”

“Okay!”

The little girl nodded, though she still wanted to accompany her sister, she didn’t insist and blinked obediently.

Jiang Feng, watching from the side, couldn’t help but picture once again the adorable image of a little girl.

That little girl seemed to embody almost all of Ming Yue’s and his own best qualities—a truly charming child.

Her eyebrows curved upward, and whenever she smiled, it felt as if the whole world could melt.

“Yao Yao is such a good girl—Sister loves you!” With that, Ming Yue planted a loud, smacking kiss on the little girl’s cheek, then gently patted her head again, letting her go to find Grandpa and Auntie, while waving cheerfully toward them in the distance.

The two adults instantly understood what Ming Yue meant and quickly coaxed the little girl over.

The little girl glanced between Grandpa and Mom, then back at her sister, still a bit hesitant.
