Chapter 158: Counterattack 84
“Look at the way you’re talking…” Jiang Feng chuckled, trying to cover it up, then ran his hand over his chin, which was almost bald from all the rubbing. “What could I possibly be hiding from you? How could I ever bear to hide anything from you?”
“Nothing?”
Ming Yue wasn’t convinced and pressed again.
Jiang Feng shook his head and raised a hand. “Really, nothing. Want me to swear on it?”
“You’d swear?” Ming Yue laughed softly. “Don’t even talk about Heaven or me—do you even believe your own words?”
Jiang Feng immediately frowned. “What’s this? Do you really think I, Jiang Feng, am that untrustworthy in your eyes? Ming Yue, that really hurts. Let’s not even talk about anything else—during all these years we’ve been together, have I ever lied to you?”
“Your turn to answer,” Ming Yue said with a cold smile.
Jiang Feng grew even more animated. “What do you mean? I can put my hand on my heart and swear to you: I, Jiang Feng, have never once deceived you, Ming Yue!”
“Is that so?”
“Isn’t it?”
“Are you sure it is?”
“Of course I’m sure!”
“Hmph, ‘of course I’m sure’?”
“Of course I’m sure!”
“Jiang Feng, you really are…”
Ming Yue rolled her eyes in exasperation.
She pressed one hand against Jiang’s chest, feeling an urge to slap him, and jabbed hard at his heart. “Jiang—you used to think you were just a no-good guy, but who would’ve guessed you’d also be such a liar! You say you never deceived me? Not even once?”
Jiang Feng still nodded, but he already had a bad feeling brewing.
Still, since he’d flatly declared he hadn’t lied, he was determined to stick to that belief. After all, you’ve got to believe it yourself before others will!
Ming Yue rolled her eyes even harder. “Then let me ask you: when you first tried to sweet-talk me into being with you, what was it you said? That you couldn’t sleep, that I was your ‘medicine’ and all that nonsense. Well, now that ‘medicine’ has worked—has the illness really been cured? Or do you think I’m just that gullible, that I couldn’t see through it and was easy to fool?”
In fact, she’d been suspicious from the very beginning. But at the time, she was on the verge of collapse and desperately needed some kind of support. With no better options available, she forced herself to trust those lies, telling herself quietly:
“He might not be targeting me, the stray dog, after all. Maybe he’s dealing with his family—or maybe he’s got something going on with Fu Qiancheng. If that’s the case, when the truth finally comes out, I’ll do everything I can to smooth things over, at least to make sure Fu Qiancheng doesn’t end up getting hurt because of this…”
The past was too painful to revisit. Ming Yue only briefly recalled it before pushing those memories aside.
At her question, the man before her froze, his smile turning stiff. He wanted to nod along and say, “Yes, it’s all better now—the illness was really severe back then.” But after thinking it over, he decided against it.
Taking a deep breath, Jiang Feng tightly grasped the small hand Ming Yue had placed on his chest, his Adam’s apple bobbing slightly. “Ming Yue, back then I…”
Ming Yue remained silent, patiently waiting for him to continue.
The little hand in his grasp was perfectly obedient, showing no sign of struggling at all. She stood there quietly, looking up at him and meeting his gaze.
That scene…
After a few seconds of silence, Jiang Feng finally chose to be honest. “Back then, I was the one who wronged you! It was my fault! At the time…”
He suddenly choked up, as if something were stuck in his throat. Just as he was about to cross that mental hurdle and lay everything bare, Ming Yue’s other hand rose and pressed across his lips.
