Chapter 35: The Agreement
“Alright. I’ll come find you in the next couple of days.”
Ming Yue didn’t hesitate for a moment; she spoke with remarkable decisiveness. Those matters… she had long since grown indifferent to them—just as she had grown indifferent to life and death itself.
Besides, this was all part of their deal to begin with, and she and he had never been entirely above reproach anyway.
With that said, she hung up the unnamed male operative’s call.
After briefly composing herself, Ming Yue walked back to the door. Just as her hand touched the lock, the phone rang again.
She pulled it out and saw Fu Qiancheng’s name on the screen.
Ming Yue frowned suddenly. As she hesitated whether to hang up, a WeChat message popped up—also from Fu Qiancheng.
The message contained only one sentence: “Yueyue, please answer the phone. I’ve made an important discovery about that matter and need to discuss it with you over the phone.”
Ming Yue immediately connected to Fu Qiancheng’s call, but she didn’t say a word—she simply held the phone to her ear.
On the other end, the man’s voice was still weak, yet filled with excitement: “Thank goodness—you’ve finally agreed to take my call!”
“Get to the point,” Ming Yue said succinctly.
The man wasted no time: “You know what I’m talking about—the incident from back then. I’ve been secretly investigating it all these years, and I’ve made significant progress. Do you have some free time in the next couple of days? Let’s meet and talk about it.”
“Are you trying to trick me into coming over?”
“No!” The man coughed twice. “Yueyue, I’ve already made one mistake—I wouldn’t dream of deceiving you about this. Please, you have to believe me.”
“How am I supposed to believe you? Fu Qiancheng, enough! Stop harassing me. If you keep it up, I won’t mind blocking you,” Ming Yue said, pretending to hang up.
Fu Qiancheng panicked and quickly replied, “Yueyue, your brother wasn’t tricked into going there in the first place! He was set up—a trap, with threats and inducements!”
As soon as he finished speaking, Fu Qiancheng began coughing violently.
Hearing this, Ming Yue’s heart ached involuntarily.
After all, they’d shared so many years together; even if she had single-handedly chosen to bury those feelings, sometimes the threads of affection that could never be completely severed would still surface uncontrollably and start playing tricks.
But she didn’t offer a single word of concern or inquiry. Instead, she fixed her gaze on the ‘progress’ that made her even more anxious and asked Fu Qiancheng, “What did you say?”
Fu Qiancheng’s cough gradually subsided. “It’s hard to explain in just a few sentences, and it’s not really appropriate to talk about this over the phone. The person who leaked this information is in Ning City right now. Do you have time? If you do, let’s go find her together. But if you don’t…”
He paused, drawing out his words: “If you don’t have time, I’ll go alone. This is something I owe you. No matter what you think or do, I’ll give you, your brother, and myself a proper explanation!”
“Give me the time and address, and I’ll come find you.”
After a brief moment of thought, Ming Yue made her decision.
She had already uncovered most of the truth about Da Ge.
But there were still some details she couldn’t quite get to the bottom of.
So she wasn’t about to let any detail—or any possible piece of evidence—slip through her fingers.
Upon hearing this, the man on the other end let out a genuine sigh of relief: “Alright, it’s settled then.”
“Mm.”
Ming Yue responded quietly, without any pleasantries or small talk, and promptly hung up.
After two rounds of emotional ups and downs, when she finally stepped downstairs and saw Liu Lai, the little boy playing with a remote-control car in the Ming Family Living Room, Ming Yue felt rather conflicted.
She neither smiled nor got angry; instead, she sat down beside the boy with an unusually calm expression. “Hey, kid, isn’t it about time we settled our score?”
“What… what are you trying to do?”
Liu Lai’s scalp tightened, and he immediately scooted away.
Ming Yue rested her chin on one hand, her expression unchanged, and stared calmly at the little guy right in front of her. “Didn’t I already say we’re settling the score? What, have you forgotten what you did to me yesterday?”
“I didn’t! It wasn’t me!”
