Chapter 62: Encountering Danger

Chapter 62: Encountering Danger

For some unknown reason, in that very instant, the pot of mixed emotions in the man’s heart seemed to spill over.

The next moment, the woman’s gaze shifted toward him.

He immediately averted his eyes, refusing to meet her stare, yet his mind was filled with the question he had once asked her: “Ming Yue, do you still love him?”

Ming Yue quickly withdrew her gaze, saying nothing and asking nothing—acting as if she hadn’t seen a thing at all—and continued to play the role of dutiful daughter and loving father with her good-natured dad.

After the birthday banquet ended, no matter how hard Fu Qiancheng tried to persuade him, Ming Shuo simply refused to budge and got into his car with Ming Yue.

But halfway through the drive, he suddenly received a phone call.

Once he hung up, Ming Shuo told the driver to pull over.

“I’ve got an urgent matter to attend to at the office; you go ahead and hail a taxi.”

With the audience gone, there was no longer any need to keep up the act. So the gentle, affable “good dad” Ming Shuo instantly transformed into Mr. Ming, his expression icy cold.

No more of the smile from the banquet.

No more of the warmth from the banquet.

And certainly no more of the elegance from the banquet.

Even his words were chillingly curt.

Fortunately, Ming Yue was also a consummate actress, effortlessly switching gears. On her pretty little face, not a trace of a smile appeared, and her voice remained just as cold: “No problem. Just pay me.”

She held out her hand, palm facing upward, toward Ming Shuo.

Ming Shuo shot her a cold glance and said in a flat tone, “No cash? WeChat transfer then.”

“Sure,” Ming Yue replied, retracting her hand.

She promptly pulled out her phone.

Ming Shuo did the same, asking, “How much do you want?”

“Just leave it to your conscience. As long as you don’t feel it would embarrass you, Boss Ming, you can give whatever you like,” Ming Yue shrugged, nonchalant.

Without a second thought, Ming Shuo casually transferred one hundred yuan.

That was all.

Ming Yue gave a faint smile, showing no sign of disdain for such a paltry sum, then opened the car door and stepped out—only to toss a sarcastic remark as she closed it behind her.

“Mr. Ming, it seems your ‘face’ isn’t worth much at all—only a hundred yuan! If I told people, I’d be afraid they’d say I picked you up off the street!”

Ming Shuo ignored her, closing his eyes to rest.

Ming Yue made a funny face, slammed the door shut, and walked toward the curb, waiting for a ride-hailing app to dispatch a car before Ming Shuo’s vehicle even pulled away.

Since this stretch of road was quite remote and there weren’t many cars around, no one answered the request right away.

But Ming Yue wasn’t worried. She rubbed her cheeks and bounced up and down on the spot, waiting for a driver while watching her “good dad” drive off.

As for whether a young girl left alone here in the middle of the night might be in danger, that person didn’t seem to have given it a single thought—and didn’t care in the least.

Of course, Ming Yue didn’t care either.

Right now, she wouldn’t even be afraid of ghosts, let alone humans; if a ghost came along, she’d twist its head off and kick it around like a ball. What was there to fear?

Besides, humans seemed far scarier than ghosts!

No one around…

Just what she wanted.

Thinking this, Ming Yue stared at her phone for a long while.

Unfortunately, no one still answered.

Ming Yue bounced around again, about to start cursing, when she saw a car pull up beside her.

Behind the wheel was none other than Fu Qiancheng.

He had already rolled down the window and opened the passenger-side door, saying to her, “Yueyue, get in.”

Ming Yue’s brow instantly furrowed. She took two steps forward and looked at the man’s pale, bloodless face. “Why aren’t you home? Do you really want to wear yourself out to death?”

“Don’t worry, I’m not ready to give up yet. Get in—I’ll take you back,” Fu Qiancheng said with a narrow-eyed smile.

Ming Yue glanced down at her phone, then looked both ways again, seeing absolutely no hope, so she went around the front of the car and climbed in. “Where’s Uncle Wu?”

“He has something urgent to take care of at home, so I sent him back.”

“So you’re driving yourself? With your current condition…”

“I’ll be fine.”

“If I really do die, it’ll be too late to regret it. There’s no soul-reviving pill for sale in this world, and of course, no regret medicine either.”

Ming Yue buckled her seatbelt.
