Chapter 70: Turning the Table

Chapter 70: Turning the Table

Ming Yue slept straight through until broad daylight.

When she opened her eyes, the unnamed male operative who had been holding her as he slept was already awake, his large eyes wide open as he gazed at her.

No sooner had Ming Yue turned her head than their eyes met.

“Awake? What would you like for breakfast?”

Jiang Feng asked with a smile.

Ming Yue curled her lips into a faint grin. “I’m not hungry. I’ll be heading back soon.”

“So early? Why not stay until evening?”

“Nope. It’s bright and sunny out—perfect weather for going home and turning a table or two over.”

Ming Yue sat up, about to get out of bed, when the man who had just risen beside her wrapped his arms around her.

“Jiang Feng, what on earth are you thinking this early in the morning? Let go—I’m not in the mood right now. Whatever I owe you, I’ll make it up to you one by one when I’m ready.”

She made it perfectly clear—and utterly blunt.

A pang shot through Jiang Feng’s heart, yet he didn’t release her; instead, he pulled her even closer. “What do you take me for? Some beast who’ll sleep with anyone?”

“Then let go.”

Ming Yue’s voice was cool and detached.

But Jiang Feng wouldn’t budge. His thin lips brushed against her ear. “It won’t be long—just a little while.”

His tone was sincere, unlike anything he’d ever said before.

Ming Yue was momentarily speechless.

She’d never seen this side of Jiang Feng before; it took her by surprise, though she didn’t argue. Instead, she sat quietly, letting him hold her close.

“Someone was following you last night, you know?”

Jiang Feng tightened his embrace, his hands interlaced at her waist, his chin resting on her shoulder as he habitually inhaled the scent of her skin.

Ming Yue still felt a bit uncomfortable—even though they’d already shared far more intimate moments, and many times over—she just wasn’t used to this kind of closeness from him.

She shifted slightly and said calmly, “I know.”

“Do you know who it was?”

Rather than giving an outright answer, Jiang Feng asked tentatively.

Ming Yue nodded softly, her voice as cool and emotionless as ever. “I have a rough idea. What are you trying to tell me?”

“Nothing—just a heads-up.”

With that, Jiang Feng knew there was no need to press further. She had her own suspicions. She knew everything. She’d simply chosen to keep it all bottled up inside, bearing it alone.

“And one more thing—about last night…” Jiang Feng paused, then decided to be completely honest with Ming Yue. “I had someone turn him over to the police.”

“Fine, let them handle it.”

Ming Yue remained nonchalant.

“He’s got a criminal record—he’ll be spending some time behind bars.”

“Mm-hmm.”

Ming Yue gave a light nod.

The two fell silent once again, a silence broken only by the cheerful chirping of birds on this beautiful, sun-dappled morning—a silence unique to their private world.

Suddenly, an impulse surged through Jiang Feng’s heart.

He tightened his arms, pulling Ming Yue closer, his thin lips brushing against her cool earlobe as he whispered, “Ming Yue, do you know…”

And then came a long stretch of silence.

Ming Yue waited for quite some time but heard nothing more. Growing impatient, she pressed him directly. “Know what?”

“N-nothing… nothing at all,” Jiang Feng swallowed his words whole, refusing to mention the matter again. Instead, he urged her, “It’s nothing—just trivial stuff. When you get home, be careful. If anything seems off, call me right away. Don’t try to handle everything on your own.”

“No need.”

Ming Yue gently freed her hand from the man’s grip around her waist, slipped on her shoes, quickly changed, slung her bag over her shoulder, and headed for the door—without looking back, without saying another word to Jiang Feng.

It was just a transaction, after all; there was no need for excessive talk.

But the unnamed male operative upstairs didn’t see it that way.

He’d been standing by the window, watching her leave the house, watching her step out into the courtyard, watching her walk farther and farther away.
