Chapter 69: First Encounter
As night fell, Ming Yue, though still sleeping with her head resting on Jiang Feng’s arm as before, was no longer lying face-to-face in his embrace. From the moment she lay down until she drifted off to sleep, Ming Yue kept her back turned toward Jiang Feng.
Listening to her even, rhythmic breathing gradually deepen, Jiang Feng’s restless heart finally calmed. He gently tightened the grip of his large hand, which had been resting on Ming Yue’s waist, pulling her closer into his arms. His burning chest pressed tightly against her back, and his soft lips brushed against the shampoo-scented strands of her hair—yet somehow, he found himself wide awake.
The pale moonlight danced across the window. Despite several attempts to close his eyes, Jiang Feng couldn’t fall asleep, so he simply opened them again. In the darkness, he quietly gazed at the petite woman before him, memories of the past few years flooding his mind—until his phone vibrated, jolting him out of his reverie. He quickly withdrew his hand from Ming Yue’s waist, not bothering to check the message right away but swiftly muting the alert.
Then he glanced at the woman in his arms. Only after making sure she hadn’t been disturbed by the sound did he slowly unlock his phone, switch to WeChat, and send a message to the person who had called: “I’m unable to talk—please send me a message.”
A quick reply came: “Okay,” followed by a flurry of messages. In essence, there were only three points: first, the tail that had been tracking him and Miss Ming had already been dealt with, but someone else was still keeping an eye on Miss Ming; second, the scumbag from the Hengxin Scrapyard had been taken care of and handed over to the police; third, all the compromising material on Liu Fan had been secured—should they make a move now?
Jiang Feng thought for a moment and replied: “Understood. No need to act yet.”
Why? Of course, it was to leave the job to the woman in his arms to handle herself.
He cast a glance at her but didn’t bother explaining to the other party. After asking a few more details, Jiang Feng suddenly instructed the person on the other end: “Go back and get some rest first. Once you’re well-rested, help me with a few things.”
The other party immediately asked what those things were. Jiang Feng replied: “I’ll tell you about the rest later. The most important thing is that today’s ‘pig sty’ is way too dirty. When you’re rested, bring some people to clean it up thoroughly.”
Hearing this, the other party instantly fired off a barrage of question marks, followed by one pointed question: “Brother, are you serious? You know exactly how filthy, how big, and how deep that ‘pig sty’ is, yet you still want me to clean it up? What, are you trying to get me fired?”
Jiang Feng didn’t explain further—he just asked: “Are you doing it or not?”
The poor guy groaned: “How could I possibly refuse? If anything happens, you’ll be the first one to come after me, won’t you?”
Jiang Feng: “If you know that, what’s there to argue about? Hurry up! And if I catch anyone hurting your Sao Zi under my nose again, it won’t be as simple as just cleaning you out!”
The other party shot back with a bunch of questions: “Sao Zi? Brother, are you talking about Miss Ming? When did she become your ‘Sao Zi’? Isn’t there…?”
Jiang Feng lost his patience and snapped, “Get lost!” But he quickly added a follow-up: “Don’t worry—I’ll arrange backup for you. Nothing will happen to you. All you have to do is help me wipe out this filthy rat’s nest once and for all.”
The other party sent a tearful emoji: “Brother, you said yourself—‘a strong dragon doesn’t oppress the local snake!’ This rat’s nest is scattered, hidden, and tied to a powerful interest group. Are you really sure about this? Once we make a move, those people will fight us to the bitter end. By then, everything we’ve worked so hard to build might just turn into a pipe dream. Is it really worth it for one woman? Have you gone crazy?”
Jiang Feng grew increasingly agitated, his tone harsh: “Cut the crap. Either you’re willing to do this, or get lost.”
After snapping at the other party, Jiang Feng stopped responding altogether. He switched off the phone screen, put it on silent mode, and set it aside. Then he gently rubbed the long hair atop Ming Yue’s head, inhaling her unique, delicate fragrance and listening to her steady, rhythmic breathing—only then did the restlessness in his heart begin to fade.
