Chapter 279: I’ll Stand By You to the End
Ling Hanyu was knocked lightly, yet instead of getting angry, he smiled.
He hugged his pillow and went to see Song Qingtian.
The two locked eyes, and Song Qingtian gradually calmed down.
“No matter what you’re thinking, I have to go back.”
Song Qingtian’s words felt like a knife stabbing straight into Ling Hanyu’s heart.
“What about me? Do you only have Nuonuo in your eyes—what about me? Even if you’re fake, I’m real!”
Ling Hanyu sat down and looked at Song Qingtian. Song Qingtian sighed and said, “Mr. Ling…”
“Calling me by my name—is that so shameful? The book paints me as a wretched person, but now that you’re here, is that really how I am?”
Song Qingtian looked at Ling Hanyu. “People tend to form preconceived notions. In the story, you’re portrayed that way, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Besides, I was in a car accident, and after that, you two got together. It’s not that I’m worried about you being together—everyone has their own life. Even if this were a fictional world, you’d still have your own choices.”
“The original owner of this body really was worthless, unable to hold her head up. If you chose to ignore her, there must be a reason. If it were me, I’d do the same.”
Song Qingtian now fully understood Ling Hanyu.
“And…”
Song Qingtian was about to say more, when Ling Hanyu gently cupped her chin and kissed her.
Song Qingtian was interrupted but breathed a sigh of relief.
“My life needs you. In the past, I didn’t treat the owner of this body well, but from now on, I will treat you—and our daughter—well. I don’t like hearing you say the original owner wasn’t good; she was great. She made all this possible for us. Otherwise… with your personality, you wouldn’t even glance at me.”
Ling Hanyu lowered his voice, and Song Qingtian bit her lip.
Indeed, only someone blind to the original female supporting character would fancy a man like Ling Hanyu. If it were her, she certainly wouldn’t be interested.
Ling Hanyu knew exactly what she was thinking. With a hint of hurt in his eyes, he kissed Song Qingtian again. “How can you not like me? What’s wrong with me?”
“Mr. Ling is just too self-righteous. Do we really need to talk about this? The facts are right in front of us—Mr. Ling really isn’t much of a person, and he hasn’t treated me very well either. If it weren’t for trying to keep me around, would he be so eager to court me?”
Song Qingtian pulled her hand away from Ling Hanyu, refusing to budge.
“If you’re giving it to me, then give it to me! But don’t wait until I’m dead to leave anything for Nuonuo. If I really did die, would you let Nuonuo starve? You make all the decisions yourself—what do you even want from me?”
Ling Hanyu chuckled. “Then I’ll ask you next time.”
“Next time?”
Song Qingtian’s face grew cold. “Save it. I’m not taking any more of your money. I’ll earn it myself. Once I’ve saved enough, I’ll buy insurance and funds for Nuonuo—enough to last her until she grows up.”
Song Qingtian stood up, ready to leave, but Ling Hanyu called out, “Let me ask you something.”
Song Qingtian turned around. “What is it?”
“Nuonuo isn’t your child. Why are you so nice to her?”
“…How could someone like you possibly understand?”
Song Qingtian turned and walked away, and Ling Hanyu followed her outside.
After dinner, the family of three sat in the courtyard, with Song Qingtian playing with their daughter. Suddenly, she noticed something odd—a figure at the doorway.
It looked suspicious.
Song Qingtian picked up her daughter and headed straight for the Villa.
Ling Hanyu changed into his pajamas, preparing to go find them, when he saw them enter the house.
“You’re back?”
Song Qingtian’s expression was grave. “Aunt Chen, please take Nuonuo to bathe and change into her pajamas. I need to talk to Mr. Ling for a moment.”
Aunt Chen knew something was up and carried Nuonuo upstairs.
Once Aunt Chen left, Ling Hanyu asked, “What’s going on?”
“It looks like there’s someone outside.”
Ling Hanyu looked toward the villa’s entrance. “Did you see them?”
“Yes, but they’re hiding.”
“I’ll go take a look.”
Ling Hanyu was about to step out, but Song Qingtian tugged on his sleeve.
Turning around, Ling Hanyu looked at Song Qingtian. “Forget it—don’t go out. Let’s check the surveillance footage tomorrow morning. It’s late at night!”
Ling Hanyu’s gaze deepened, and a faint smile played on his lips. “Afraid something might happen to me?”
“I’m not afraid. It’s just… if something happens to you, Nuonuo and I will be in danger too. With you around, wouldn’t the attackers target you first?”
Song Qingtian released her hand and started to walk away, but Ling Hanyu suddenly wrapped his arms around her from behind.
Song Qingtian stopped and glanced back at Ling Hanyu.
Ling Hanyu kissed her. “Except for letting you go, I’ll give you everything!”
“Brother, love and physical intimacy are two different things. You’d better ask your own heart—do you really love me?”
“What if I do?”
“Then it’s just like that!”
Song Qingtian had never thought about taking responsibility. Being single was so much better—everything was at her fingertips, and she could do whatever she wanted!
Ling Hanyu gritted his teeth. “Heartless!”
“Hmph…” Song Qingtian laughed, annoyed. “What’s the value of ‘conscience’ anyway? You’re a businessman, shrewd and cunning—talking to me about conscience? Save it!”
Song Qingtian pushed Ling Hanyu away. “Get off me! You’re keeping an old lady up!”
Ling Hanyu took a step back, staring blankly at Song Qingtian. “So this is your true colors?”
“So it’s still not too late to regret it. Otherwise, this old lady will show you what fierce determination and a roaring lioness’s roar really mean!”
“Ling Hanyu will stand by you to the end!”
Song Qingtian was extremely frustrated. She bit her lip and turned around, heading straight back inside!
