Chapter 102: Counterattack 28

Ming Yue’s new home is settled in a brand-new residential complex—a three-bedroom, one-living-room unit, fully furnished with everything you could possibly need. Yet all the belongings she’d brought over from the Ming Family Home had now become nothing but clutter.

Looking around the room filled with stuff, Ming Yue simply couldn’t bring herself to tidy up. It had never been her forte.

She still remembered how, back when she was at home, she’d always neglect cleaning and tidying. Whenever Mother saw it, she couldn’t help but scold her, saying, “You’re not like a proper girl at all—can’t even keep your own little nest clean! Who on earth would want to marry you someday?”

Ming Yue didn’t dare argue with the authority of her family, so she could only pout and stand in the corner, ‘reflecting’ on her behavior. Then, as always, her savior would show up right on time, casually brushing off the authority with a few light words and even smiling warmly as he said:

“Mom, please don’t say that. Our little Yueyue is already doing just fine—she’s pretty, she’s well-behaved, and whoever ends up marrying our dear Yueyue will be blessed ten lifetimes over! Besides, isn’t there someone else who can help with chores like cleaning? Even if we don’t feel like doing it ourselves, we can always hire an aunt to take care of it, can’t we?”

“You just spoil her too much!” Mom would always say that.

And then Da Ge, her savior, would chime in: “If we don’t spoil our own girl, are we supposed to treat her like a burden instead? Mom, girls already have it tough enough living in this world—if even our own family doesn’t show her a little love and indulgence, what on earth will happen to her in the future?”

“Fine, fine, go ahead and spoil her! But just wait and see what you’ll do when she gets so spoiled she becomes completely unruly. Let me warn you now: don’t come crying to me later—this is all your own fault!”

“Mom, don’t worry. As long as I’m here, I’ll do everything in my power to protect my younger siblings—and I definitely won’t come crying to you about it. You should really take some time to enjoy your own life instead of always pouring all your time and energy into Dad and this household. Women deserve their own lives; they shouldn’t spend every single moment revolving around the family. If you ask me, Mom, why don’t you just go back to work?”

“No way—I’m perfectly comfortable leaving the company in Dad’s hands. What matters most to me is taking good care of you all.”

“Mom, you…”

Her memories stopped there. Suddenly, Ming Yue, slumped on the living room sofa, opened her eyes.

She had never really thought deeply about these things before. But today, out of the blue, as she reflected on them more carefully, she realized that when Da Ge said those words back then, there seemed to be more than meets the eye.

Could it be that he already knew something at the time? No way!

Back then, Da Ge was only sixteen years old! He was just a kid—only a high school sophomore, for heaven’s sake!

How could he possibly know so much?

Just as she was lost in thought, the phone suddenly rang. Ming Yue reached for her phone and saw it was Jiang Feng calling, so she casually swiped to answer, her voice laced with laziness: “What is it? I’m exhausted!”

“I’m downstairs. There’s a dog outside your building—did you notice?”

Jiang Feng’s voice was soft and gentle.

Ming Yue lazily replied, “I’ve noticed it ages ago. If I don’t even have this basic level of alertness, I guess my bones must be rotten by now.”

“What are your plans? Should we shoot it dead, or let it catch us?”

“A dog? Of course we should let it play its part—let it hang out down there for now. What do you want, anyway? If you’ve got nothing to do, stop hanging around here and just go home,” Ming Yue said nonchalantly.

As for the fact that a dog had been following her, she’d known about it long ago. After all these years of being out in the world, if she hadn’t developed at least a bit of sharpness and intuition, she’d have been dead long ago. How could she possibly still be alive today? How could she have made it all the way back here?
